World Virtual Indoor Rowing Championships

12 Mar

You couldn’t get more timely than Concept2’s World Rowing Virtual Sprints. First, we drenched Brits have been swept off the rivers by flooding and off lakes by winds for months now driving us into the gym for seemingly interminable erg sessions. Then, Coronavirus comes along resulting in ever increasing cancellations of big sporting events (eg. USA’s National Basketbal League has halted games indefinitely). Everyone is doing their bit to maximise social distancing, so an actual competition on the erg that doesn’t involve people in the same place is about as apropos as you could get (remember to wipe them down when you are finished including the screen!).

And the British pararowing community responded to the challenge with enthusiastic participation and laudable success. The “virtual” event attracted over 100 para entries from 16 countries. The UK picked up a WPR1 gold (Sally Hopewell, Marlow), a MPR3 silver (MPR3 Ray Lowrie, Devon), and a MPR1 gold (Chris Anslow, Cheadle) as well as a 4 further age category medals
