Looking forward to the exciting Paralympic year of 2020 started with a look back on this past year and beyond with a retrospective piece featuring yours truly in January issue of Rowing & Regatta magazine. The new regular section highlights a range of rowing community members working in the areas that the new LoveRowing foundation supports and asks them for their perspectives on why they themselves “love rowing”.
The issue also included an article about BRIC 2019 highlighting the world class successes of the para-athletes:
- “Ben Pritchard stormed home in the PR1 Men’s 2km in a time of 7:32.0, wiping a staggering 33 seconds off the previous world’s best. It was truly awesome to see such a fast time from an athlete using only his arms and shoulders. Just a few machines over, fellow GB [Para]Rowing Team member Gieder Rakauskaite also achieve a world record time in the PR3 women’s 2km of 7:03.1. There were further age category successes for the GB Para-rowers when Lauren Rowles finished the PR2 women’s 2km in 8:18.1, while in the PR3 men’s 2km race, Oliver Stanhope stomred home in 6:40.1. But the adults were not alone. Junior Georgia Walker also set an age category world record in the sixth form girls PR3 [VI] 2km, recording the first official time for this event in Britain. She hopes others will follow her. ‘I’m always looking for more competition so I hope seeing records like this will encourage more juniors to get involved in adaptive events,’ she said. ‘This is my third year at BRIC. Every year I come back to me my personal best. The atmosphere is great and every year is bigger and better!”
