British Indoor Rowing Championships 2020

7 Dec

This year’s British Indoor Rowing Championships (BRIC) was a fitting coda to the crazy year that was 2020. We’ve all be sequestered indoors doing more indoor rowing than we have ever done. And we have turned to technology together in new ways.

BRIC is always a big, exciting event on the rowing calendar, but it was never bigger than this year for the Adaptive and Pararowing community. Over 100 competitor-seats took part (compared to 59 last year) in 23 events (with British adaptive/para athletes winning 12 of them). With geography not a constraint for the online format, the event attracted para competitors from over a dozen countries – USA, Hungary, Italy, France, Israel, Germany, Canada, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and Latvia. And the field included a broad range of athletes from newcomers to the joys of erging to Paralympians. The commentators noted that several competitors were para-athletes from other sports (eg. Victoria Lyon was previously a paraswimmer) who had turned to the rowing machine to keep fit during lockdown when they couldn’t access their gyms or other training facilities. It wasn’t a surprise then that 10 new Championship records were set in the Adaptive Rowing categories, including 16 from the British entries:

  • Andrew McEvoy, M AR2 4 minute
  • Sally Renard, W AR3 4 minute
  • Chris Anslow, M AR1 4 minute
